Prof. Dr. Teruo Higa
Prof. Dr. Teruo Higa is the pioneering inventor of Effective Microorganisms (EM), a microbial technology that promotes sustainable agriculture, environmental regeneration, and health. As a professor of horticulture at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan, Prof. Higa developed EM in the 1980s to restore natural balance using beneficial microbes. His work has inspired global movements in organic farming and ecological restoration. Today, EM technology is used in over 100 countries, improving soil health, water quality, and waste management. Prof. Higa continues to advocate for a balanced interaction with nature.
What is EM?
Effective Microorganisms (EM), originally developed by Dr. Teruo Higa of Japan, is a carefully crafted mix of beneficial microbes naturally found in fermentation processes. Free from genetically modified organisms, EM promotes sustainable solutions for soil health, waste treatment, and ecological balance.
In India, Maple Orgtech Ltd., Kolkata, produces Dr. Higa’s original EM under the name Maple EM.1. EcoPro distributes these products, including specialized variants tailored for diverse applications.
